The focus of the Joining Handbook is the material itself, the type of high strength steel that is suitable for a certain application, and whether joining is most effective when welded adhesive bonded or mechanically joined.

"We have based our research on how various joints in high strength steels perform. The important aspect is to provide anyone who uses our high strength steels with the necessary knowledge to be able to put the vast potential of these steels to use," says Tony Nilsson, who is responsible for the working group at SSAB Tunnplåt that has produced the Sheet Steel Joining Handbook.

The expertise of a dozen employees at SSAB Tunnplåt in Borlänge has been pooled to produce the handbook. In addition, a number of users and customers have served as a reference group and have given their views during the development of the handbook content .

"This has enabled us to ensure that the handbook will really work in the way we had intended, as an easily understandable and comprehensive handbook for designers, welding engineers and production personnel. As a result, we also expect the handbook to be suitable for use in various training applications, provided that the trainees have some fundamental knowledge of joining."

The handbook covers joining of all the types of high strength steels which make up the range produced by SSAB Tunnplåt, hot-rolled Domex, cold-rolled Docol, hot-dip galvanised Dogal, and prepainted Prelaq.

The emphasis of the handbook is on various welding methods, principally fusion welding, but also resistance welding, including spot welding, seam welding and projection welding. The handbook also deals with mechanical joining and adhesive bonding.

Fatigue and static strength are discussed in detail in all sections, since these matters are of vital importance in allowing the properties of the steels to be put to maximum use.

The Sheet Steel Joining Handbook represents a natural followup of the two earlier handbooks published by SSAB Tunnplåt, the Sheet Steel Handbook and the Sheet Steel Forming Handbook. These handbooks together form a trio that simplifies the selection of materials and the working of high strength steels.

Tony Nilsson concludes:
"In order to promote in-depth knowledge, we will be offering regular courses and seminars related to the Sheet Steel Joining Handbook, in the same way that we are already doing with the other handbooks. The focus will be on welding, although other joining methods will also be dealt with during the seminars.
