JOINT EFFORT CREATES NEW CONCEPT
22 October 2004 - SSAB Tunnplåt AB

The use of advanced high strength steel may require higher force to cut and form sheet steel. Therefore, the need for higher hardness and ductility in the tool steel becomes obvious.

The present situation and future development in advanced high strength steel forces the desired tool steel properties to develop even further to match the requirements. These are the main reasons why SSAB Swedish Steel and Uddeholm Tooling, each a world leading actor in its own field of business, have decided to cooperate in struggle for even more perfected and harmonized products. Products to be used in today´s and future advanced cold work applications.

The cooperation will make it easier for customers to use advanced high strength steels in their pro-duction. In addition to providing better support to existing customers, new users will also find it easier to switch to high strength steels by being assisted right from the start in selecting the appro-priate production system for their products. As a result, customers will be able to achieve profitable and efficient production more quickly. The technical customer service personnel of both companies will be extensively trained to familiarise them with each other's products, in order to be able to pro-vide both support in minor matters and complete solutions for materials, tooling and machining.

"We know that this is eagerly awaited news which is of great value to manufacturing companies around the world," explains Anders Werme, President of SSAB Tunnplåt. "The interest in advanced high strength steels and their use is constantly growing, and this trend will doubtless continue. The driving force is the demand of consumers for lighter and more environment-friendly products which represent better value for money, particularly in the automotive industry. Correctly applied, ad-vanced high strength steels will meet these requirements."

In addition to the international conference in Sweden, the companies jointly issued a written guide that gives advice on the tool steels which should be selected for machining advanced high strength steels. The title of the guide is "Tooling solutions for advanced high strength steel", and it gives users advice on finding the right combination of materials and tooling.

The new collaboration is being launched simultaneously world wide, and the transition will be smooth, since the technical development departments of the companies have become well ac-quainted with one another during the various development projects over the past seven years that have led to today's "Tooling solutions for advanced high strength steel".

Both companies also have a strong international profile, with their own support organisations estab-lished throughout the world.

"We both work in an international environment in which our successes are largely based on a high standard of service, technical competence, and the ability to cooperate and communicate across na-tional and cultural borders," says Anders Ruth, President of Uddeholm Tooling. "This cooperation will broaden our competence further, thus also strengthening our position on the international scene, and improving further our technical service and customer support."
