The South African Automotive industry is increasingly turning to extra high strength and ultra high strength steels in order to develop vehicles that are stronger and lighter. Trucks and trailers can be built with lighter chassis and fewer reinforcements. Vehicles built with high strength steel from SSAB Swedish Steel have substantially higher load-carrying capacity and provide hauliers and transport companies with higher revenues. SSAB presents the advantages of the new steels at the AutoAfrica fair October 26th to 31st. "A trailer made of advanced high strength steels is not only light, it is also very stiff," explains Bruce White, Sales Manager at SSAB Swedish Steel. "This results in low vibrations, reduced wear and a longer useful life with better economy." The higher strength and hardness of the steels make more advanced design solutions possible, and the weight can be cut by up to 50 per cent. In the production of passenger cars, extra high strength and ultra high strength steels can cut the weight of the car, while still retaining or even increasing the energy absorption capability and thus also the safety. SSAB Swedish Steel delivers high strength steels to several of the major automotive companies in the world, who are using these steels for vital safety structures of their cars. In South Africa, SSAB Swedish Steel is already the major supplier to manufacturers of trailers and truck bodies. One of the customers, Trailord Pty Ltd of Bloemfontein received one of the prestigious Swedish Steel Prize awards last year for the design of their unique s-shaped trailer chassis using Domex extra high strength steels from SSAB Swedish Steel. The Domex hot-rolled steels are produced with yield strengths of up to 700 MPa. The cold-rolled high strength steel from SSAB Swedish Steel are marketed under the Docol brand name, and are available with tensile strengths of up to 1400 MPa. Both Domex and Docol are also available as ballistic protection steels fur use in cars, security vans and police vehicles.
