WORLD'S STRONGEST WEATHER RESISTANT STEEL
SSAB Swedish Steel is launching the world's first extra high strength steels with weather resistant properties. Hot-rolled Domex 100W (100 min. yield) is manufactured from .118" .236", and Docol 100W, which is a cold reduced steel, is produced between .0197" and .079". In approximately two years, an oxide layer forms on the surface which impedes corrosion-inducing moisture from entering the steel. This gives 4 to 5 times the corrosion resistance of conventional steels. The new weather resistant extra high strength steels are suitable for containers, railway cars and wagons, bridges, vehicle chassis, utility poles and other constructions where the combination of extra high strength and excellent resistance to corrosion results in more profitable products. "The weather resistant extra high strength steel open doors for new, lighter and stronger constructions in environments that are exposed to moisture," says Kevin Kale, Director of Sales at SSAB Swedish Steel, Pittsburgh, PA.. "The choice of material is an important competitive tool that can significantly improve product performance. Our new steels provide an excellent alternative for a wide range of applications. Using extra high strength steel can significantly reduce the dead weight of constructions, while existing properties and performance are retained or improved. This results in increased profitability and energy savings throughout a product's life cycle. "Domex and Docol 100W have outstanding welding and forming characteristics, and can be fabricated without changing production procedures", comments Mr. Kale. The steel's high degree of purity explains the good forming properties; tight bending radii can be carried out in all directions. Common welding methods can be used and these steels do not require pre-heating, which further enhances production efficiencies and profitability.
