PEARL EFFECT: BEAUTY IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
24 June 2006 - ThyssenKrupp Steel

The appearance of products from Thyssen Krupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH with pearl-effect coatings changes depending on where they are seen from. This effect, which can provide visual highlights for the facades of residential and commercial buildings, is created by so-called interference pigments. ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH is exhibiting construction elements with the pearl-effect coating in hall 1, booth 410.

Surfaces with pearlescent coatings have a rainbow luster, like pearls or soap bubbles. A variety of color effects is possible. The key to this is a clear outer coating to which special pigments have been added. Light rays reflect differently from the pigmentation and in part are superimposed, resulting in so-called interference light. The top coat beneath the clear outer coating determines the basic shade of this play of colors.

A polyvinyldene fluoride paint is used for the top coat. PVDF paints are particularly weatherproof, resistant to environmental effects and correspondingly durable. The pearl-effect coating, primer, top coat and clear coating, is around 45 micrometers thick. Production of the coated steel strip at ThyssenKrupp Steel calls for extreme precision. A uniform pearl effect on the surface of the steel is only guaranteed if the required coating thickness is applied over the entire length and width of the strip to very close tolerances. ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH supplies pearl-effect coatings for all wall and facade elements in its range.
