The materials business is one of the engines of technological progress. New materials, be they metal, glass, plastic, ceramics, rubber or composites, open up new possibilities in the automobile, aerospace, medical implant, mobile phone, building and energy sectors among many others. As a major source of innovation, materials research is seen as a high priority by Germany's national and state governments and by the EU.

Rhine-Ruhr region ready for take-off
Among Germany's regions, North Rhine-Westphalia and the Ruhr have particularly high levels of materials expertise, both in research & development and in production. To make the Rhine-Ruhr region the number one internationally in this vital sector, Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet, under the lead of its moderator, ThyssenKrupp CEO Dr.-Ing. Ekkehard Schulz, has launched a pilot project called "Materials research and development, Engine for innovations in the Ruhr." By bringing together leading players in materials research and production, Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet aims to facilitate decisive innovation leaps and kick-start economic growth and the creation of jobs. As well as the portal, a scholarship program and a materials business plan competition, the project includes the Rhine-Ruhr International Materials Conference & Award 2005.

Databases for more informationBridging the gap between theory and practice: The new portal provides materials suppliers, researchers and students with a wide range of information on the subject of "Materials" in the Ruhr. As an information hub for developers, suppliers and customers, the portal encourages users to share knowledge and work together. It also offers important orientation for young people planning their careers.

Backed by strong partners, the portal provides a clear presentation of the latest specialist information and easy access to important industry databases. The NeMa database was developed in 1998 with the support of leading companies and research organizations from the New Materials sector and contains up-to-date information on over 3,000 materials from all categories. The new internet-based materials and steel database StahlDat offers a wide range of knowledge on all standardized European steel grades and numerous proprietary grades.
