STRINGENT NEW REGULATIONS REDUCE ACCEPTABLE VIBRATION LEVELS BY AS MUCH AS 37 PER CENT
Global innovation company 3M has produced an information pack to help companies comply with the new EU regulations on hand-arm vibration at work. The pack contains a straightforward guide explaining the new rules and how employers can protect their workforce, case studies to illustrate the issues and possible solutions, and information about a range of 3M products that can contribute to a reduction in vibration levels. The introduction in the UK of the Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive, which came into force in July this year, has reduced acceptable levels of hand-arm vibration by as much as 37 per cent. Under the new rules, employers are responsible for minimising the risks of vibration by taking proper precautionary measures and ensuring that exposure is kept to safe levels. The big shake up, A guide to the new rules on hand-arm vibration at work is a straightforward information booklet for employers. The guide explains how the new rules affect employers, how to measure hand-arm vibration levels, the steps that must be taken to ensure workforce safety and how to choose products and tools that minimise the risks of vibration. "The affects of hand-arm vibration can be severe, causing long-term injuries such as shoulder damage, tennis elbow and Carpal Tunnel syndrome," explains Jonathan McGargle, Business Development Manager at 3M Abrasive Systems. "These new regulations are certainly a good thing for the users of vibrating tools, though there remains some confusion among employers about how to measure vibration levels and facilitate reductions where necessary. We have produced this information pack to address these questions and to help employers protect those who may be at risk."
