NEW TOUCH SCREEN TECHNOLOGY FROM 3M
02 July 2006 - 3M Europe

3M Touch Systems today announces that NEC Display Solutions Europe GmbH will market NEC displays integrated with MicroTouch Dispersive Signal Technology touch screens from 3M to address the growing demand for large format, interactive LCD displays in environments such as retail and entertainment.

Clemens von Braunmuehl, Section Manager Product Management at NEC Display Solutions Europe said, "Our decision to market 3M's MicroTouch DST touch-enabled products demonstrates our commitment to the display market and our strength in recognising new, compelling technologies that will benefit our customer base. 3M's DST has made a great impression on us, particularly for its unique feature set and ability to accommodate large LCD display sizes. We are positive that our customers will feel the same."

The NEC MultiSync LCD4010, 40-inch LCD public display is the first commercialised product to be integrated with 3M's break-through MicroTouch DST touch screen technology. The NEC-based touch monitor solution is manufactured by Richardson Electronics, who has been playing a key role in the integration of DST technology into the NEC public display LCD. Richardson will integrate the technology at its ACT Kern division in Germany.

According to Antonio Antonini, European product Marketing manager, Richardson Electronics, "We are pleased to be able to offer this new touch technology in large format to the European market. Richardson Electronics has strong engineering capabilities and we have been working closely with 3M and NEC Display Solutions to develop touch-enabled large format public displays such as the NEC MultiSync LCD4010."

He continued, "We will be offering the products via our own channel as well as the NEC Display Solutions distribution network. Our key strengths in delivering comprehensive product support and servicing to customers will be fundamental for a successful launch of DST large format displays in Europe."

The 40-inch MicroTouch DST touch screen is the first in a planned product range of large format (over 30-inches) touch screens. Key applications include conference rooms, education, financial exchange, retail signage and billboard, transportation, and other varied indoor venues such as casino hospitality, trade shows, clubs and restaurants.

"We are seeing significant potential for touch in the non-consumer, large screen LCD display market," commented Francesco Fasoglio, European Market Development Manager, 3M Touch Systems. "Large format touch screens offer particular benefits for the retail market. As more and more purchasing decisions are made at the point of advertising, whether in a supermarket or a retail chain, large format displays help to capture the audience and direct the customer to the most profitable item. Using touch, customers interact with the system to access more information on a specific item, enhancing their overall shopping experience. This helps the retailer to maintain a strong brand image whilst improving customer satisfaction and retention."

DST represents a fundamentally different approach to touch. Unlike other solutions that recognise touch by the interruption of electrical fields, acoustic waves, optical fields, or infrared light, DST recognises touch by interpreting bending waves created in the overlay substrate via the impact of a touch. This approach helps eliminate performance issues associated with on-screen contaminants and surface scratches, while offering enhanced palm rejection. All of these features represent key functional advantages in the target application segments.
