New dressing improves security and comfort during longer-term IV access

3M Europe (published 31/10/2005)

3M Health Care has extended its proven range of Tegaderm I.V. dressings with a new design specifically to secure peripherally inserted central catheters. PICCs, which are the fastest growing type of catheter used for central venous access, are typically left in place for several weeks to several months, and thus require secure and reliable fixation. The Tegaderm 1650 I.V. dressing combines the waterproof, bacterial and viral barrier properties of Tegaderm film with soft cloth tape, for added reinforcement and dressing security.

It is estimated that between 100,000 to 150,000 PICC lines are inserted each year in the UK, as more patients require longer-term medical treatment. The large oval shape of the Tegaderm 1650 I.V. dressing conforms well to the insertion site, improving patient comfort and dressing wear time. The specially designed deep notch provides a better seal around the catheter and hub, while two pre-cut sterile soft cloth tape strips help secure the catheter and infusion line and minimise the risk of catheter dislodgement. To encourage documentation of dressing change, a microporous record label is also included.

The Tegaderm 1650 I.V. dressing complies with the ICNA (Infection Control Nurses Association) Guidelines for Preventing Intravascular Catheter-Related Infection (2001.) The dressing is available in boxes of 25 dressings on Drug Tariff as well as through NHS Logistics and 3M-appointed distributors.
