Smooth operators at 3M Atherstone are lending their expertise to help the British bobsleigh team polish its competitive edge ready for the coming Winter Olympics in February. The site is a leader in the design and manufacture of specialist abrasives and the British team called on its assistance to help get their runners to the highest possible standard. Peter Gunn, coach to the British women's bobsleigh team, commented: "The surface of the runners is vital when a fraction of a second can make all the difference in winning or losing. 3M is renowned worldwide as being a leading company for sandpaper and abrasives, so it was the obvious choice for us. "We are delighted they agreed to help and the result is that we now have runners with a mirror-like finish, and a large of stock of abrasives to keep them that way though to the Olympics and beyond." The abrasives donated by the company range from the coarser grades to super-fine Microabrasives made at the Atherstone site. 3M Technical Service Specialist Nigel Willcock said the company had been extremely pleased to help the British team. "We advised them on techniques for achieving the best possible finish before their events and how to do running repairs on the track when the runners have been scratched by grit in the track" said Nigel. "The stock of products we have given them will hopefully last them a long time." Leading up to the Turin Winter Olympics, the team will first be competing at World Cup events in Canada in November. Women's team members Jackie Davies and Nicola Minichiello took the silver medal at the last World Championships in February this year.
