BRIGHT IDEA TO KEEP CHILDREN SAFE ON THE ROADS
24 October 2005 - 3M Europe

According to Government statistics 539 school children aged 15 or under were killed or seriously injured on British roads last winter, almost half in accidents between the hours of 3pm and 6pm.

The statistics suggest that walking home from school during the winter months could be amongst the most hazardous times in a young person's life.

As the end of British Summer Time heralds an earlier dusk, global technology company 3M has announced its support for the Department of Transport's road safety campaign, THINK!

In an effort to reduce the number of avoidable deaths on the roads 3M is donating 50,000 high visibility vests to primary schools across the UK. The vests incorporate 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material - the same material used by the emergency services - helping school children to 'Be Safe, Be Seen'. Thousands more are being sent to teachers and adult helpers.

3M is donating the vests as part of its community programme. Said Heather McMahon, the company's Community Programme Manager: "We are targeting the vests at 7 to 10 year old pupils as this is the age when children start travelling to school independently.

"And now is the time of year when they are at their most vulnerable, as the dark winter months approach."

Said Andrew Hodder, headmaster of one of the schools receiving the vests, Kennet Valley Church of England Aided Primary School, in Abingdon: "We're in a rural location and many of our pupils cycle along country roads with no footpath to get to and from school.

"These high visibility vests from 3M will make pupils more visible to passing motorists when walking between our two sites which are three miles apart, on school trips and during cycle training for our Year 6 pupils."

Speaking recently, road safety minister Stephen Ladyman said: "The number of children killed or injured on our roads is coming down each year, but we can't afford to be complacent.

"We need to keep reminding children how important it is to stay visible on the roads, especially at this time of year when they're likely to be out in the dark more often."
