ABB HELPS THE TRAFFIC FLOW FREELY IN SANTIAGO DE CHILE
28 June 2006 - ABB Automation Technologies
| A comprehensive package of ABB integrated systems, automation, ventilation, lighting, signage and traffic management, has helped make the new Costanera Norte expressway in Chile the most advanced multilane expressway in the world |
Acclaimed by independent authorities as the most advanced expressway of its kind in the world, Costanera Norte cuts across northern Santiago in an east-west direction to relieve heavy congestion in downtown areas and provide a fast link to the city's international airport. Built at a cost of $600 million the 38-kilometer expressway is part of the largest highway construction program in South America. Costanera Norte's extensive automation, ventilation and electrical systems were supplied by ABB and include some of the most advanced solutions in highway technology in Latin America. Two of the biggest challenges in the entire project are the two tunnels, one of which goes under the Mapocho river, and for which ABB engineered ventilation systems and environmental data measuring and monitoring systems to ensure that the tunnels are free from toxic fumes. Operational control relies on a digital connection with System 800xA with Delphi software. Other ABB solutions include the complete lighting and electrification of the expressway and tunnels, including electronic signage and messaging, as well as video, public address and communication systems, and the monitoring of the 220 SOS posts along the length of the expressway. Santiago has a population of 4.8 million and is the seventh largest city in the Americas. A map of Santiago, highlighting the Costanera Norte highway system. Each ABB system is monitored and controlled by an ABB supervisory control and data acquisition and distributed control system based on ABB's award-winning System 800xA automation platform using AC 800M controllers and Process Portal A software. Costanera Norte is one of several similar projects that ABB has completed worldwide.
