An ABB automation solution for 17 printing plants will enable the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal to appear in a new, slimmer format that will save publishers Dow Jones millions of dollars in annual production costs and secure print quality.

The new format will be three inches slimmer (7.6 cm) than the current 15 inches, and will enable the world’s leading business paper to reduce annual production costs by an estimated $18 million and retain its traditional broadsheet profile.

The ABB solution consists of 58 MPS Control Consoles for the 19 printing presses and an MPS Production press management system for each of the 17 printing plants.

ABB supplied the automation systems that enabled Dow Jones to switch to color presses in 1994 and maintain high quality in printing. MPS Production is a press automation and management system that handles the planning and production of the print product, optimizes print quality and reduces waste.

The MPS Control Consoles enable operators to control and operate the entire printing process from a single workstation.

“For more than 10 years, ABB has partnered with Dow Jones to finely tune our press consoles in an effort to meet our quality expectations and reduce waste,” says Larry Hoffman, vice president of production for The Wall Street Journal.

“ABB’s high level of reliability, proven flexibility to add and expand new functionality, and operator-friendly interface is something we have grown to count on.”

ABB has supplied similar solutions for customers in Europe, North and South America, and Asia, and is the recognized leader in control and automation technologies for the newspaper printing industry worldwide.
