The consortium formed by Promon Engenharia and ABB, the power and automation technology group, was awarded a Gas Insulated Substation project at the PETROBRAS REDUC Refinery (Duque de Caxias Refinery). The order comprises gas insulated switchgear, power transformers and distribution switchgears as well as protection panels. The ABB scope of supply includes expansion of an existing medium voltage substation, in addition to erection supervision, commissioning, start up and training, while Promon will be responsible for the electromechanical and civil assembly plus detail installation engineering. "ABB's solutions will allow us to further expand the refinery using smaller equipment which requires smaller space," said Fernando Barros, Engineering Project Implementation Manager at the PETROBRAS REDUC Refinery. "The old substation couldn't be upgraded while in operation and ABB gave us the most competitive price for the new substation." The new ABB equipment, which is smaller in size and weight than traditional competing systems, will allow PETROBRAS to minimize the size associated buildings while maintaining strict compliance with high demanding technical specifications. The project completion is scheduled for January, 2004.
