ZX1 DEVELOPMENT PREMIERED AT INTERKAMA
12 October 2001 - ABB Automation Technologies

ABB presented its new gas-insulated medium-voltage switchgear at the INTERKAMA 2001 trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany. The ZX1 with modular design from the product family of the same name guarantees a constant supply of power and, in spite of its standardization, provides great scope for use in a wide variety of applications. With its low maintenance requirements, the ZX1 is also particularly economic.

ABB presented the new switchgear alongside the REF542 plus bay control and protection unit. The new unit has been designed to turn the switchgear into an intelligent component for distribution of electrical energy in public utility networks as well as in industry. The integrated Web server will enable the unit to handle communications tasks, which provides many options for local operations and the use of various field buses as interfaces, e.g. Ethernet.

The new unit will not only make it possible to notify technicians of failures by SMS or email, the technicians will also be able to deal with them from any location via the unit's highly protected Internet links. The bay control unit's basic task is the protection, interlocking, measuring and monitoring of energy flows. Future-oriented sensor technologies have been implemented for current and voltage signal acquisition and status reports.

The ZX1 has been designed for voltages ranging between 12 and 40.5 kV, rated short-circuit breaking currents of up to 31.5 kA and rated currents of up to 2,500 A. Its technical features include gas-proofing using alternative protection and insulating gases, vacuum switching technology, a digital bay control and protection unit, sensor and plug-in technologies. All maintenance-free components are located in gas-proof stainless-steel enclosures with insulating gas to protect the components against weathering and premature ageing.

The cubicles in the ZX family also possess a very flexible modular design. The compact modules may be combined in different ways to generate solutions for almost any requirement on the market. The individual elements may be preassembled and subsequently connected to create complete patch panels thus enabling production stages to be carried out in parallel and processing times to be reduced. ABB's ZX1 medium-voltage switching system ensures unlimited mechanical and electrical functionality during its entire service life.
