29 June 2006 - Alberta Research Council

An Alberta Research Council business unit, NuRx Services, is supporting the research and development needs of one of Canada's fastest growing biotech companies.

CV Technologies is an Edmonton-based biopharmaceutical company that develops and manufactures evidence-based natural health products for disease prevention and health maintenance. Its lead product, COLD-FX is a popular natural health product used in preventing colds and flu.

NuRx Services is an ARC research unit specializing in nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology R & D services.

"Working with NuRx Services had been integral in helping our company succeed," says Jacqueline Shan, CEO, CV Technologies. "The lab services they've provided have helped us get through a recent rapid growth period. Having this type of service available to local biotech start-ups is great for the Alberta biotechnology industry."

"I strongly believe this working arrangement represents the future of life sciences industry in Alberta," says Tom Facklam, vice-president, Life Sciences, ARC. "No industry succeeds without key partnerships and strategic alliances to help it grow and thrive, and life sciences are no different."

CV Technologies' research and development team work on site in NuRx Services labs located in the Edmonton Research Park. The team has access to NuRx Services employees to help complete projects, all NuRx facilities including equipment, analytical services, quality assurance documentation and quality control micro/analytical support, as well as infrastructure services within ARC's building, the largest facility in the Research Park.

"Alberta's Life Sciences industry is growing and ARC is well positioned to provide early stage life sciences companies with the product development assistance, technical services and facilities required to ensure the industry continues to grow," says Myka Osinchuk, director, Life Sciences. "Our role in the province's innovation strategy is to work with customers to get their products into the marketplace."

NuRx Services has a proven track record of working with local biotechnology companies. They provide complete project confidentiality, have flexible contract and collaborative services arrangements and are experienced in intellectual asset management and technology commercialization. In addition to CV Technologies, NuRx Services is partnering with other Alberta-based life sciences companies.

The Alberta Research Council Inc. delivers innovative science and technology solutions to meet the priorities of industry and government in Alberta and beyond. Integrated multi-disciplinary teams help customers and partners take technologies from the laboratory to the field, strengthening their competitiveness and sustainability.

CV Technologies was founded in 1992. It aims to become a global leader in the development and commercialization of evidence based, natural medicines for disease prevention and health maintenance. CVT's lead product, COLD-fX, strengthens the immune system and is widely used as a leading anti-cold, anti-flu, therapeutic.
