PROJECTS UNLEASH INNOVATION IN ENERGY, BIOPRODUCTS AND FIRE PROTECTION

Edmonton...Building better solar panels and increasing energy efficiency on Alberta farms are just two of the projects funded under the latest round of the province's innovation program.

"Good ideas need seed funding to move to the next level and to develop new products and services," said Victor Doerksen, Minister of Alberta Innovation and Science. "The Innovation Program was created to invest in leading-edge new projects to create long-term benefits for Albertans."

A total of 17 projects are approved to share more than $15 million in funding. The projects focus on value-added agriculture, fire prevention, sustainable resource planning, climate change, energy production and improving service delivery to Albertans.

The agricultural projects include development of value-added bioproducts from crops such as flax, and provide support for new abattoir facilities to meet the needs of Alberta's livestock producers and address niche markets such as game and organically grown meats.

The Innovation Program was established in 2004 as a three-year, $33-million initiative to support innovative proposals developed by Alberta government departments, agencies, boards, commissions, Crown corporations and their partners. The Innovation Program is designed to achieve government's long-term goals for the province's prosperity by expanding Alberta's capacity for innovation.
