ARC & REAL TIME MEASUREMENTS DEVELOPING EVALUATION SERVICES FOR UNCONVENTIONAL GAS
29 November 2004 - Alberta Research Council
| The Alberta Research Council and Real Time Measurements Inc. have announced a collaborative alliance on field in-situ permeability measurement services, which will help advance the development of unconventional natural gas resources in Western Canada. |
The alliance combines RTM's premium downhole electronic reservoir pressure measurement services with ARC's expertise in coalbed methane and shale gas property evaluation. The partners will apply their integrated knowledge and research-based technologies to solving CBM permeability measurement problems in more efficient ways. "We're excited to be working with RTM to bring permeability measurement services and ARC's ability to improve technologies to Western Canada's unconventional gas industry. Our combined services will help producers identify economic coalbed methane prospects and lead to better methods of evaluating coalbed methane reservoirs," says Dr. Pieter van Nierop, manager of ARC's Carbon and Energy Management group. John Robinson, coalbed methane engineer with more than 15 years of permeability evaluation experience, will manage ARC's participation. Other members of ARC's Unconventional Gas Research Group include Jeffrey Sinclair, technology development and marketing officer, and Derek Krivak, project manager and unconventional gas analytical specialist, both based in Calgary. Calgary-based Real Time Measurements provides downhole measurement services that combine advanced technology and proven methods in a safe, environmentally sound and timely manner. Under the agreement, RTM will provide expertise related to downhole measurement and recording of injection/fall-off well tests. ARC will provide the engineering and pumping services necessary to successfully complete the in-situ injection/fall-off tests. This alliance is uniquely suited for optimized evaluation of permeability of CBM zones for Canadian oil and gas operators. "We are very pleased to be partnering with ARC," says Mr. Terry Matthews, president of Real Time Measurements. "We're excited to be developing an integrated service that will help advance the unconventional gas industry in Western Canada." Coalbed methane and other forms of unconventional natural gas constitute a critical energy source for Canada's future natural gas supply. Western Canadian reserves of unconventional gas (e.g. CBM, shale gas, tight gas) are substantial and could account for a significant portion of Canadian gas production in the future. Natural gas recovery from these unconventional gas sources requires different technology than conventional gas recovery; the collaboration between ARC and Real Time Measurements will provide the measurement, pumping and engineering expertise and further research into new technologies needed for more effectively completing economic evaluations of unconventional gas properties.
