NEW WELDING WIRE HAS BEEN LAUNCHED
22 July 2006 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK

Specially developed through Sandvik’s R&D organisation, one of Europe’s most technologically advanced facilities for stainless steel welding, the new wire is for welding duplex stainless steel grade Sandvik SAF 2205 (UNS S31803/S32205), and other duplex stainless steels such as UNS S32304 (Sandvik SAF 2304) and UNS S31500 (Sandvik 3RE60).

The high deposition rate MIG welding process offers high welding speeds and is particularly suited to applications such as welding oil and gas pipelines. The new Sandvik consumable provides this processing benefit along with excellent weldability including good arc stability, little spatter and a smooth transition between weld and parent material.

As well as providing faster welding speeds through the MIG process, another important characteristic of grade Sandvik 22.8.3.LSi welding wire is consistent welding performance, excellent feeding properties and consistent weld metal properties. This consistency of performance and properties - from batch to batch, heat to heat and delivery to delivery is common to all Sandvik welding consumables and is brought about by fully integrated material processing from steel melt to finished product.

Part of the development process included extensive in-house trialling and testing. The results have allowed Sandvik to claim better welding performance with no diminution of weld properties, compared to other consumables currently available in the market. Sandvik is also claiming that the new Sandvik 22.8.3.LSi MIG wire can be used wherever flux covered electrodes are offered as the alternative for duplex steel welding.

Designed for use with highly corrosion resistant duplex steels, the new consumable is resistant to intergranular corrosion and pitting. It also has good resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking, especially in environments containing Hydrogen Sulphide.

Sandvik 22.8.3.LSi welding wire complies fully with key ASME/AWS and EN standards and has TÜV approval for welding of pressure vessels and other constructions under pressure. The consumable is available in a range of sizes from Sandvik stock.
