EXXONMOBIL POLYOLEFINS PLANT SETS RECORD IN INDUSTRY SAFETY
“This award symbolizes ExxonMobil Chemical's strong commitment and dedication to achieve superior safety performance,” said Bruce Macklin, vice president, global operations. “ExxonMobil has many business priorities, but there is none greater than the safety of our workplaces.” The Distinguished Safety Award recognizes those facilities that have operated at the highest standards of excellence and is part of the comprehensive safety awards program developed by NPRA’s Safety and Health Committee. The committee promotes accident prevention in the petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries and publicly recognizes the industry’s excellent record of safety in operations. Rich Mohring, ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant manager, explains that his site's success is based in the belief that safety is the core value of management and employees. "Our management and the plant's 400 employees consider safety a value that can never be prioritized or compromised. With that belief, we can collectively focus on achieving ExxonMobil’s goal of “Nobody Gets Hurt,” he says Recipients of the Distinguished Safety Award must pass a comprehensive review of individual safety performance programs. To be considered for the award, a location must achieve both an employee and contractor total recordable incidence rate* of 0.8 or less and have had no employee cases involving days away from work for the applicable evaluation period. A selection committee from NPRA’s Safety and Health Committee then reviews the facility’s overall performance history over three evaluation periods and its performance based on number of hours or years worked without a lost workday case, and reviews a written description of the facility’s safety program. Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant employees recently achieved 12 months without a recordable injury and 67 months without a loss-time incident. The Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant produces over 2.5 billion lb./yr. of high-density polyethylene and polypropylene. Applications include familiar household items such as polyethylene milk jugs, detergent and oil bottles, and automotive fuel tanks. The sites' polypropylene resin can be found in diapers, medical garments, carpet backing, and beverage bottle closures. In addition to the four Distinguished Safety Awards, the Polyolefins Plant has received four consecutive Louisiana Chemical Association “Best in Louisiana” SAFE Awards. NPRA is a national trade association whose members include more than 450 companies, including virtually all U.S. refiners and petrochemical manufacturers. * (A total recordable incidence rate is a calculation of the number of injuries and illnesses reported to the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration multiplied by 200,000, the base number of hours worked for 100 full time employees.
