The Davenport Melt Viscometer from Lloyd Instruments, which already offers significant cost and environmental benefits for PET testing, now has the added benefit of being fully compatible with the company’s powerful Windows-based NEXYGEN-Davenport polymer test and data analysis software. The updated version of the instrument features a standard computer card which will interface with computers running Windows 2000 or XP operating systems. NEXYGEN-Davenport software, part of the NEXYGEN software family, is a powerful program featuring a vast library of international standard tests for many different materials testing applications and is already used for control of the company's 'Plus', EZ and LR universal testing machines An upgrade kit is also available to allow existing Melt Viscometer customers to take full advantage of the new NEXYGEN software. The Davenport Melt Viscometer uses a unique solvent-free method for routine testing of the melt viscosity and intrinsic viscosity of PET. Alternative methods require the use and subsequent disposal of toxic solvents with all the associated costs. Using a method that does not require solvents also means that there are also no adverse effects on the environment. The instrument extrudes molten PET through a calibrated die by nitrogen gas under pressure. The LVDT probe movement against time is recorded and displayed. The system advises the optimum flow rate and calculates melt viscosity and intrinsic viscosity. The procedure used ensures that reliable, accurate and repeatable results are easily obtained and checked against standard polymers. Polymers can be tested at virtually all stages of the process: incoming resin, powder, dry granules, molten polymer, pre-forms, bottles, films and even recycled material to eliminate scrap. Rapid testing at the different stages can be carried out using ancillary equipment for controlled sample collection and preparation.
