Fully automated penetration tests for rubber enclosures on multiple glass phials are now possible using the XY table with automated control from materials testing specialist, Lloyd Instruments. This new accessory allows three separate tests to be performed fully automatically on 40 sample phials in around three hours, compared to a week for a human operator. The XY table can be fitted to the base of any Lloyd Instruments' single column materials testing machine and is fully controlled via a specially written program using NEXYGEN MT data analysis and control software (with Ondio applications builder software). It can be configured to perform a one point hypodermic needle penetration test, a five point penetration test and a self-sealability test. A method for measuring rubber retained in the needle is also included. The XY table is divided into three sections. The first two have quick-change racks which can accommodate up to 40 hypodermic needles in their plastic covers and 40 glass phials fitted with rubber enclosures respectively. The third section incorporates a removable bin in which used needles are deposited. An upper pneumatically operated grip automatically picks up a hypodermic needle from its cover. The table then moves under computer control to correctly position the rubber enclosure under the needle. The instrument then performs the penetration tests, measuring the insertion and removal forces required. The five point flushing test includes the facility to flush the needle with distilled water to wash any residual rubber from the needle into the phial, where it can later be weighed. The self-sealability test routine inserts the needle into the rubber 25 times in a random pattern. The needle is deposited in the removable bin after the test. Automating the procedure guarantees accuracy and precision as the speed of the insertion is computer controlled. This brings repeatable test performance, avoiding subjective manual testing methods. The system also offers the additional benefit of releasing laboratory technicians to perform other duties.
