CORK TESTING BRINGS THRILLS WITHOUT SPILLS
18 August 2006 - Lloyd Instruments

The testing of extraction and penetration strength for wine bottle stoppers in accordance with ISO 9727 (1991) is an essential part of the technical specification for the product. Lloyd Instrumentscan supply a special sample grip for the beverage and packaging industry to allow these important parameters to be tested reliably and reproducibly using its materials testing machines such as the latest LFPlus.

Wine stoppers must provide enough strength to seal a product and prevent contamination without being too difficult to open. Natural cork has served the wine industry for hundreds of years, but the introduction of polymer substitutes has started to become a more viable and cost-effective alternative for many manufacturers. The use of materials testing regimes in quality, production line or research environments allows comparisons to be made between natural and polymer cork and ensure compliance with internationally agreed standards of performance such as ISO 9727 (1991).

For wine stopper testing, Lloyd Instruments can supply a special cork screw grip and instrument base plate. These firmly hold the cork and bottle (respectively) for quick and accurate testing of extraction and penetration strength on the machine. A simple, quick changeover of grip alters functionality to accommodate many different product samples and build cost-efficiency into any quality testing procedure.

Standard mechanical tests that are quick and easy to perform on an LFPlus or other Lloyd Instruments testing machine include compression loads (to check insertion forces) and relaxation and peak tension measurements (to check extraction forces). The LFPlus is a 1 kN high performance universal testing machine that produces rapid results at an affordable price.

Key features of the LFPlus include a novel modular design for extended customer choice, instant accessory recognition through a plug-and-play operation and test speeds ranging from 0.05 to 1270 mm/min (accurate to better than 0.2%). Unlike other machines on the market, this machine features a deep 170 mm (6.9 in) throat and generous working area to accommodate larger than average sized samples.

Extended control also comes from the company's NEXYGEN MT premier software package. Recognised for its vast test library and easy to use Windows interface, the current version includes full audit and security trail features, advanced password security, SPC functionality and customer report configuration. Ondio application builder software, part of the extended NEXYGEN family, is also available for customers who want to design their own test set-ups.
