SANDVIK'S SUPER DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL REPLACES ALUMINIUM BRASS TUBING IN POWER PLANT
Steam condensers in power plants use large quantities of thin wall tubing in order in cool down the steam leaving the turbine. The lower the temperature, the more electricity that can be produced. The tubes on order add up to a volume of some 250km and they will replace existing aluminium brass tubes, many of which have been plugged due to erosion failure. A complete retube of the condenser is now necessary to restore capacity. The Sandvik SAF 2507 tubes will be installed into an existing tube plate. In this application, a high speed water flow through the condenser combined with brackish, sand containing river water led to accelerated erosion and premature tube failure in the aluminium brass material. Sandvik SAF 2507 is a high alloy duplex stainless steel for service in highly corrosive conditions. It is characterised, in particular, by high resistance to erosion corrosion and corrosion fatigue and very high mechanical strength. Technical cooperation between Sandvik as the manufacturer and the customer enabled Sandvik SAF 2507 grade to be specified. It is the mechanical properties combined with Sandvik SAF 2507's general corrosion resistance that give the grade its good resistance to erosion corrosion. Testing in sand containing media shows erosion corrosion better than corresponding austenitic stainless steels and special alloys such as aluminium brass.
