Solvay Advanced Polymers, L.L.C. announces the addition of HALAR ECTFE to its portfolio of high-performance polymers for the membrane industry. The exceptional chemical resistance and stability at high pH levels of this fluoropolymer broadens the performance capabilities of the company’s product offering.

This product will be featured in the company’s exhibit at the upcoming American
Water Works Association annual conference and exposition being held in
Anaheim, Calif., June 15-19, 2003. HALAR ECTFE is a copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene that brings advantages to membranes used in water purification systems used for both potable and waste water treatment. It has excellent resistance to aggressive cleaning agents. The more aggressive the cleaning agent, the cleaner the membrane. The cleaner the membrane, the higher its flux and better overall operating efficiency.

Membranes made with HALAR ECTFE can last longer and require fewer replacements because of the polymer’s resistance to a wide range of chemicals. These membranes are not affected by direct exposure to strong bases (such as sodium and potassium hydroxides), strong mineral and oxidizing acids (such as sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids), and chlorinated compounds (such as methylene chloride and sodium hypochlorite). This is a significant performance advantage over many other materials used for polymeric membranes today.

HALAR ECTFE is also resistant to strong polar solvents, such as dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, and N-methyl pyrrolidone, which are typically used to fabricate polymeric membranes. The company currently offers two grades of HALAR ECTFE designed especially for the membrane industry.
