Moog FCS and FlightSafety International today announced they have been awarded Level D Certification from the United States Federal Aviation Administration for the world's first full flight simulator equipped with electric motion and control loading systems that they have designed and manufactured. "Moog FCS and FSI have worked together to bring electric technology to the flight simulation industry and we are proud to be part of this significant technology breakthrough" said R.T. Brady, Chairman and CEO. "This is the culmination of years of development at Moog and FCS and it has allowed Moog to take a further step in consolidating its market leadership position in simulation." For commercial aircraft, Level D Certification is the highest level attainable and it is based on the evaluation of the performance of a simulator in relation to an actual aircraft. It enables pilots to do all of their training on a full flight simulator and accumulate the requisite hours needed to qualify for a flight license. Motion base and control loading systems for this application must have very high fidelity, smoothness, and reliability. The certification of the FSI simulator is a breakthrough made possible by Moog's innovative developments in electric technology. The development of high voltage brushless servomotors and associated servodrives, new ball screw technology for smoother performance, and high-speed communication protocols were all critical milestones in achieving this success. Moog FCS has been providing motion control technology for flight simulation for 30 years with over 400 motion base systems installed including more than 35 electric systems for heavy lift (> 25000 lbs flying payload) military and commercial applications. Electric motion base systems include actuators (legs), joint assemblies, power and motion control cabinets, motion control and motion cueing software and Ethernet/Firewire host interfaces.
