MOOG INTRODUCES SERVO GEARMOTOR WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY
10 August 2006 - Moog Controls

Moog. Inc., Electric Products Division, has introduced a new Servo Gearmotor with a patented design that offers high performance, improved efficiency, high power density, maximum reliability, optimized heat transfer, and smaller package size for industrial applications. This product features a low backlash single stage gearbox integrated with a high-performance servomotor. It is available in three frame sizes (55 mm, 70 mm and 100 mm) with two defined gear ratios per frame size, combined with four motor stack lengths.

The integrated design concept of the Moog Servo Gearmotor results in smaller size, shorter length, and minimized weight compared to standard gear attachments. Elimination of couplings also reduces drive train inertia, offering higher throughputs and machine productivity. A special gear tooth manufacturing process enables the smoothest gear movement and provides nominal efficiencies up to 98 percent.

Another important feature of the patented design is improved reliability. The gearbox has lifetime lubrication and has a special membrane feature to keep the internal pressure at a constant rate, thereby reducing contamination and premature failures. The integrated design eliminates the front flange, provides a rigid coupling and assures proper alignment. The elimination of the front flange also provides for optimized heat transfer to improve the continuous power output and provide superior overload capability for applications with higher cycle rates.

“This new product offers a performance advantage needed by machine builders with fast and accurate positioning requirements,” said Joe Syty, Business Unit Manager for Moog’s Electric Drives Products. “This highly competitive product is a welcome addition to our extensive line of servomotors and servodrives, offering another option for applications with high dynamic requirements.”

Moog’s proven G Series Servomotor is the base of the motor design. Moog also partnered with Neugart GMBH to adapt gear technology and manufacturing processes for the Servo Gearmotor product line.

Major benefits of the Moog Servo Gearmotor are:

High efficiency (up to 98 percent at nominal values) through optimized gear design enables improved speed and performance.
Smaller package size and minimized weight allows for increase flexibility in machine design.
Low backlash design enables precision positioning.
High torsional stiffness for the highest servo loop gains improves machine performance.
Minimized inertia due to integrated design increases throughput.
Lifetime lubrication and patented membrane design increases seal life and increases reliability.
Optimized heat transfer provides superior overload capability needed for higher cycle rate applications.
Pre-tested gearmotor and performance-matched components facilitate start-up and reduce downtime.
Extensive global network for application system integration and follow-up support.
