MOOG PREVIEWS ELECTRIC, HYDRAULIC AND COMBINED SOLUTIONS
19 May 2003 - Moog Controls

Moog Inc., Industrial Controls Division, will exhibit new motion control products and systems featuring electric, hydraulic and combined hydraulic-electric technologies at the National Plastics Exhibition 2003.

Moog Inc., Industrial Controls Division, will exhibit new motion control products and systems featuring electric, hydraulic and combined hydraulic-electric technologies at the National Plastics Exhibition 2003.

Plastic systems expertise and access to a portfolio of components in all three technologies (electric, hydraulic and combined hydraulic-electric) has enabled Moog engineers to create new, innovative solutions such as the Moog PowerShot Injection System and the MaxForce Electro-Mechanical Actuator System.

Moog’s new machine technologies will be exhibited through moving and static displays at NPE Booth No. 2676 South Hall. Moog will have a team of experts in plastics applications from the Americas, Asia, and Europe on hand to discuss new projects and opportunities with plastics companies.

“Moog will be displaying some of the most innovative solutions in the plastics market today,” said Bill Collins, Director of Business Development, Moog, ICD. “Our world-class injection and blow molding know-how and experience in electric, hydraulic, and hybrid technologies enables us to partner with our customers to develop the best-in-industry solutions for each application.”

Electric System Solutions:
Moog is featuring a working demonstration of the MaxForce 887 Series Electro-Mechanical Actuator as the solution for total axis control for high performance, heavy-duty all-electric plastic applications. This customizable system fully integrates a servomotor with a linear actuator to provide a compact, efficient design for a variety of injection and blow molding applications. The MaxForce 887 Series Electro-Mechanical Actuator has all-steel construction for durability and can accommodate a peak force of 350 kN [80,000 lbs.].

Moog’s MaxForce custom electro-mechanical actuator products for clamping, injection, shuttle, and ejector axes are available in multiple sizes and with a selection of Moog Servomotors and Servodrives. A special model is also available for parison control. Customers can specify inline, foldback, roller screw, and ball screw configurations. Moog specializes in matching the right Moog components that meet the specific customers needs to ensure the best performance and price.

Combined Electric and Hydraulic System Solutions:
Moog will show for the first time at NPE an actual model of the new Moog PowerShot Injection System that combines the best of electric and hydraulic technologies. This compact unit can be installed easily and adapted to a wide variety of force, speed, and torque requirements. This unique technology is designed for demanding injection molding applications that require operating at high speeds and/or forces, and precise control.

Also featured is the new PowerShift Actuator System. This system combines an electric actuator coupled to a sealed hydraulic system to provide precise control of clamp opening/closing, tonnage build, and mold break. This system combines the modularity, repeatability, and quietness of an electric system, with the high force of a hydraulic system, in a package that is energy-efficient and scaleable to a wide variety of machine sizes.

Hydraulic System Solutions:
Moog’s Integrated Hydraulic Manifold Systems are fully integrated, self-contained systems, designed for each customer application. Each offers a clean, tested, and reliable turnkey solution for machine builders in the plastics industry. Known for high quality, leak-free systems that are easy to install, Moog offers a wide range of hydraulic valves (cartridge valves, directional valves), Servovalves, and Servo-Proportional Valves to provide hydraulic solutions to improve overall machine performance.

Moog’s RKP Radial Piston Pump is well respected in the plastics industry for its high reliability, robust and contamination-resistant design, and rapid response time. This pump has a large selection of control options, thru-drive capabilities and the ability to accommodate special fluids.

New Products:
In addition to previewing its system solutions, Moog will display some of its newest products, including:

Digital Interface Valve (D636/D638): Moog Digital Interface Valves with fieldbus communications and configurable functions enable customers to define the dynamic behavior of the valve and adapt its characteristics to particular application requirements. State-of-the art functionality, such as diagnostic capabilities, integrated monitoring of key environmental and internal characteristics, and valve parameter modification, can be accessed on-site or remotely, making this one of the most revolutionary Servo-Proportional designs on the market.

MSC (Moog Servocontroller)and MACS (Moog Axis Control Software): The MSC with MACS provide advanced digital motion control for hydraulic and electric products. The MSC is a high performance servo controller with PLC functionality capable of handling complex multi-axis functions and enabling cycles times as fast as 500 microseconds. MACS is user-friendly and flexible with an IEC 61131 development environment with 6 programming languages. This powerful, easy-to-use system ensures rapid implementation and set-up to save users time and money.
