ALZO NOBEL IN THE SPOTLIGHT AS A 4X4 IS BORN
28 August 2006 - Akzo Nobel

The Car Refinishes Instruction Centre at Akzo Nobel was host to the cast and crew from the ‘Is Born’ series in April. The ‘Is Born’ team were filming their next series for the Discovery Home & Leisure channel, which features a 4x4 being built from scrap and salvage in a tight time frame. The 4x4 was brought partially complete into Akzo Nobel’s Abingdon headquarters to be painted and filmed for the series which is currently airing.

Mark Evans, the show’s presenter, contacted Akzo Nobel when he was looking for a paint company to work on the project. “Akzo Nobel was the ideal company for the 4x4 spraying. They have an excellent reputation but in addition the facilities at Abingdon were perfect.”

“The onsite training centre was a great environment to film in, a large spray booth with big windows meant it was easy to get the crew in there. They were also able to offer me the benefit of a training course which meant I understood the painting process.”

The vehicle was sprayed using Sikkens Colorbuild primer. The basecoat was the Sikkens waterborne system, Autowave, using a unique colour mixed from the new range of Xirallic toners and the vehicle was finished using Autoclear WB, also a waterborne product. The end result is a vehicle with a stunning finish, with the resilience to resist the tough conditions a 4x4 might be expected to encounter.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to be involved in the filming of A 4x4 is Born,” commented Ed. “The Sikkens paint systems used are of the highest calibre. Ease of application, superb coverage, and fast drying times ensured we were able to get the vehicle turned round swiftly, meeting the tight filming schedules.”

“The finished vehicle looks spectacular, and the durability of Sikkens products guarantees this finish will last.”

Akzo Nobel staff including Robbie Murphy, the training manager and Kevin Broocks, the senior colourist and Ed Hilborne all put in long hours to get the vehicle painted in time. Although they were able to do some panels separately, the team only had 1 day to prep and paint the full vehicle. “Some of the panels arrived in bad condition which meant the prep time took a lot longer than expected, putting pressure on the time scale,” commented Ed.

The A 4x4 is Born series totals 15 episodes of half an hour showing the build of the vehicle from start to finish. The episode featuring the painting will show shots from the spray day at Akzo Nobel, as well as a piece by Ed Hilborne talking about car refinishing and paints.

The project began in January with a rusty Range Rover chassis bought by the show presenter, Mark Evans, from a friend for £250. The show team have painstakingly rebuilt the vehicle using salvage parts cut to fit. In several places parts have had to be hand made, such as the roll cage. By the conclusion of the build in mid May, some 2,000 hours had been spent building the vehicle.
