ARE RUGBY SUPPORTERS 'GREENER' THAN FOOTBALL FANS?
A team of Cardiff University researchers will question Welsh and Scottish rugby supporters about how they travelled to the Six Nations on 12 February and how much money they will spend in Cardiff. Professor Max Munday and Dr Andrea Collins at the Economic and Social Research Council Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society at the University will use this information to calculate the environmental ‘footprint’ and economic impacts of the event. A similar study was undertaken by BRASS for the FA Cup Final between Manchester United FC and Millwall FC. Dr Andrea Collins said: "From this study we want to compare the spending patterns and environmental impacts of Six Nation rugby supporters with those at the FA Cup Final. Do rugby supporters have similar travel patterns? Will they consume more or less pies and chips? Will they produce as much litter and waste as football fans during their stay in Cardiff? We will even be able to answer the question: Do Rugby supporters drink more or less beer than football fans?" Businesses in Cardiff City Centre will also be contacted to find out how much food and drink was purchased by supporters over the weekend. The World Wildlife Fund, who are supporters of this research have provided some advice for those fans who are concerned about the environment. "Everyone can make a difference to reduce their environmental impact without ruining the excitement of the match. WWF Cymru hopes that through providing some easy to follow tips for supporters we can help make Wales’ favourite sporting game a bit greener. So whether you are travelling to the match or watching it at home, the message is the same, choose public transport as much as possible, avoid excess packaging and choose local food," said Morgan Parry, Head of WWF Cymru.
