While some head teachers have described the recent slump in students taking foreign languages at GCSE as a ‘catastrophe’, the number of adult learners taking languages has grown in recent years. The new system will enable tutors to support and communicate with students instantly, sending out audio and video clips to their work stations. The centre offers more than 500 courses in more than 100 venues across south east Wales. Its extensive language programme includes French, Spanish, Greek, German, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. Other subjects range from Archaeology and Creative Writing to Computer Studies and Photography. "Returning to the classroom can be daunting," said the Centre’s Marketing Officer Kelly Cumiskey. "It is all too easy to believe common misconceptions such as ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. "At the Centre we understand that people need to be encouraged to take that first step back into learning and with our support students can dispel those myths." The Cardiff Centre for Lifelong Learning is in Senghennydd Road, Cardiff (next to the Sherman Theatre).
