A huge investment at Cardiff University will enable engineers to produce microscopic components for industry, leading to major savings for manufacturers.

The £3.8million MicroBridge facility at the University’s Manufacturing Engineering Centre will enable precision engineers in manufacturing to work to the same micro-scales as those in electronics.

"By producing such small components, manufacturers can save on materials, reduce component count and labour, dramatically lowering overall costs, adjusting market pricing to become highly competitive and increasing profits," said Frank Marsh, the Centre’s marketing director.

"The benefits from this jump in technology will be almost immediate and will have implications across a range of sectors, including communications, optics and the automotive industry."

The Centre won funding for MicroBridge from the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department of Trade and Industry.

The technology enables engineers to work with any materials, which could lead to even greater reductions in the size of products and associated benefits.

This new capability will enable industrial users of the Cardiff-based MicroBridge facility to implement new designs rapidly, ready for manufacture, thereby increasing their penetration of global high-tech product markets. News of products which have been designed using these new technologies will be emerging soon.

Microbridge builds on the Centre’s successful track record in micro-tooling.
