OECD AND IISI TO HOLD SPECIAL MEETING ON STEEL ISSUES

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in cooperation with IISI, will hold a special High-Level Group Meeting in January 2005.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in cooperation with IISI, will hold a special High-Level Group Meeting in January 2005. The purpose of the meeting is to exchange information on current and emerging developments in steel. The meeting will also examine key issues related to raw materials, transport and sustainable development.

Steel companies are welcome to participate in the meeting. Companies can either join with the delegation from their country, or they can approach IISI and ask to be included in its delegation. The meeting will be hosted by the OECD in Paris on 12 and 13 January 2005. IISI will host a reception for all participants on the evening of 12 January.

The draft agenda for the meeting includes panel discussions on:
• World steel markets. An OECD presentation will examine the situation from a global perspective. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the prospects in the automotive and construction markets. The panel will also discuss developments in three principal areas - Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

• Raw material and transportation issues. A panel of raw material and transport experts will discuss the current situation and longer-term prospects.

• Steel and sustainable development. The panel discussion will focus on how sustainability issues are being addressed in different economies and the implications for steel. The panel will also explore steel industry developments pertaining to sustainable development.

• Industry prospects. A panel of experts will discuss issues relating to restructuring and industry consolidation in their respective area and the outlook for the future.

• Public policy issues. A joint industry/government panel will discuss the principal challenges facing the steel industry and the role of governments in meeting these challenges.

The IISI and OECD secretariats are working together to form the panels for the discussions. More information on the panels will be published before the meeting.

The OECD has published the draft agenda and a paper outlining the background to the talks and issues to be discussed. Submissions are welcome.

The January meeting follows on from the High-Level Group meeting held in June 2004. At the June meeting, participants agreed that it would be beneficial to meet to exchange information and assess conditions as they evolve.
