CARDIFF CHEMISTS POSSESS WINNING FORMULA
The outstanding quality of research in Cardiff University’s School of Chemistry has been recognised by major national awards for four members of staff. David Knight, Professor of Synthetic Organic Chemistry in the School, has been awarded the prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry Tilden lectureship. Founded in 1939 in memory of Sir William Augustus Tilden, President of the RSC from 1903-5, the award is made annually to three of the younger members of the RSC who will give lectures on progress in any branch of chemistry. Professor of Theoretical Chemistry, Peter Knowles has won the RSC Industrially Sponsored Award in Computational Chemistry and Cameron Jones, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in the School, has won the RSC Industrially Sponsored Award in Main Group Element Chemistry. These awards bestow the highest accolade on members of the chemical science community and are given to those who have made fundamental contributions to their subject as well as to those whose work has been directed to its application. Meanwhile, Dr Nick Tomkinson, a lecturer in Organic Chemistry, has been awarded an Advanced Research Fellowship by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. This will enable him to focus exclusively on research for five years. "I am delighted that the work in Cardiff’s School of Chemistry has been recognised by these prestigious awards. This will strengthen our position as one of the leading Chemistry schools in the UK and motivate staff to continue making world-class advances in research," said Professor Graham Hutchings, Head of the School of Chemistry.
