Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. today announced the release of new Hi-Rel COTS T83 series solid tantalum chip capacitors, designed to provide high reliability and a choice of standard and low-ESR values in five different case sizes.

Designed for a variety of avionics and military systems such as radar, missiles, and other weapons systems, the new T83 capacitors offer capacitance/voltage values not available in current military specifications, allowing designers to reduce the size, weight, and component count of existing assemblies.

These molded case capacitors are available in five case codes, sizes A through E, per EIA-535BAAC. They provide designers with a high-reliability, screened capacitor that does not require a source control or customer drawing.

The devices released today, part of Vishay's TANTAMOUNT tantalum capacitor family, have a capacitance range of 0.1 µF to 330 µF and voltage range from 4 V to 35 V. This capacitance/voltage range represents 40 % more values than existing equivalent military offerings. Devices in the T83 series operate over a temperature range of -55 °C to +125 °C. Part number coding allows designers to select termination plating, reliability screening, surge current test conditions, and ESR level.

The option of low ESR values, which extend down to 0.1 Ω at +25 C and 100 kHz, allows for more efficient filtering in critical dc-to-dc conversion applications, while the T83's high ripple current handling capability is key for ensuring stable output voltages.

Their extended capacitance/voltage values, coupled with reliability, surge current, and ESR options, make the T83 tantalum capacitors a flexible solution for a wide variety of application and performance requirements. The T83 will additionally help to reduce the size and weight of end products by virtue of their small case sizes and by enabling designs that require fewer components.

The surface-mount T83 capacitors are available in standard EIA tape-and-reel packages that are compatible with high-volume automatic pick-and-place equipment. Tin-lead (Sn/Pb) terminations are standard, but tin and gold terminations (RoHS-compliant) are available. Weibull grading and surge-current test options per MIL PRF 55365 are available.
