HONEYWELL INTRODUCES KDR 610 WEATHER RECEIVER OFFERING EXPANDED DATA WITH XM RADIO LINK

Honeywell announced today that it has introduced a new datalink weather receiver, the KDR 610, which offers real-time weather information to general aviation aircraft via XM satellite radio.

The KDR 610 is being displayed at the annual Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Designed to interface with the Bendix/King KMD 250, KMD 550 and KMD 850 Multi-Function Displays, it is expected to be available by the end of the year.

“The KDR 610 adds a new dimension to Honeywell’s line of datalink weather receivers by providing XM satellite radio weather at any altitude, including on the ground, anywhere in the continental United States,” said Tom Kraft, Honeywell Business & General Aviation’s Business Manager for GA Aftermarket. “It contributes significantly to situational awareness and weather avoidance by allowing the pilot to overlay the active flight plan on all graphical weather images, pan and zoom into specific areas of interest and gather more detailed information. There’s no need to request data or wait for a reply, because the KDR 610 provides the most recent information available by automatically updating the weather data even if it’s not being viewed on the MFD,” he added.

The system is comprised of three hardware components: the KDR 610 receiver, a cockpit display, and an antenna. The KDR 610 will receive the signal and supply the data to the MFD, which can display it in textual or graphical format. Entire files can be received in a matter of seconds. Available weather products include composite NEXRAD radar, graphical and textual Airman’s Meteorological Information and Significant Meteorological Information, as well as textual Surface Observations Reports and Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts.

“By linking to XM satellite radio, the KDR 610 enhances the ability to flight plan effectively and adjust course enroute with real-time weather information regardless of what altitude is being flown,” Kraft explained.

Honeywell will also display the new KDR 610 at the annual Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Expo in Palm Springs, California, November 9-11, 2006.
