Honeywell announced today that it has been selected by Marshall Aerospace to provide Honeywell’s RDR-4000M military weather radar as part of their upgrade for the Royal Netherlands Air Force C-130 aircraft.

Marshall Aerospace will be the first in the world to install the Honeywell next-generation RDR4000 volumetric radar in a C-130 aircraft.

The upgrade also includes Honeywell’s Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System.

“The RDR-4000M is a military derivative of our commercial RDR-4000 next-generation radar,” said Dean Flatt, President, Honeywell Aerospace Defense & Space. “It offers the same features as the RDR-4000 plus unique military modes, at a fraction of the cost of currently available systems, and will provide safer flight for a military transport aircraft in poor weather conditions.”

Features of the RDR-4000M include:

• A high-resolution ground map for a more detailed picture
• Skin-paint mode for rendezvous and refueling operations
• Fully automatic weather and ground map modes for enhanced situational awareness
• Significant operational cost savings from high reliability, reduced weight, and advanced design technology

The RDR-4000M is unique in that it automatically collects a complete three-dimensional volumetric scan of all weather and terrain ahead of the aircraft, showing the most reflective part of the storm cell. It has an integral global terrain database that continually updates and enables the radar to identify, tag, and extract ground clutter without affecting weather returns.
