NEW DUAL CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR DELIVERS MORE POWER
17 July 2006 - Honeywell Specialty Materials

Honeywell announced today that its HTS900-2 turboshaft engine has completed two tests confirming design intent and critical for certification by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“The HTS900-2 turboshaft engine has a Dual Centrifugal Compressor giving operators more power, lower turbine temperatures and improved fuel economy,” said Nasos Karras, Vice President, Helicopters, Honeywell Aerospace. “This configuration gives operators 50 percent more shaft horsepower, or about a 5 percent increase in sea-level standard day takeoff power while maintaining the same engine installation footprint as the HTS900-1.”

The successful completion of the dual centrifugal compressor rig test and the engine testing are two major program milestones and support the B417 and the U.S. Army’s Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter development programs being conducted by Bell Helicopter. The HTS900-2 engine will provide primary propulsion for these helicopters, which have combined orders of more than 600 units.

The milestones accomplished include:

• Successful rig testing of the new dual centrifugal compressor rotor for the HTS900-2 engine. The new compressor rotor, which is based in part on Honeywell’s work with the U.S. Army in their Aviation Applied Technology Directorate Small Heavy Fuel Engine Program, facilitates the increase in the engine’s takeoff power output to 970 shaft horsepower and demonstrated substantial compressor efficiency gains. During the rig test the dual centrifugal compressor rotor was operated at speeds in excess of certification requirements and exhibited excellent operability and efficiency characteristics that exceeded the components’ design requirements and all measured stress levels were well within design requirements.

• First Engine to Test milestone of the dual centrifugal compressor was successfully accomplished with a certifiable configuration HTS900-2 engine. Over the past several weeks, this certifiable configured engine has continued testing and has been operated at both full speed and full power, continuing to meet or exceed all of the HTS900-2 design expectations.

“The recent accomplishments of the HTS900 program team have confirmed that the HTS900-2 engine development is on-track to meet or exceed the engine’s design goals of power output, operability and fuel consumption,” said Mike Tate, Honeywell’s HTS900 Program Manager.
