Target 2010, in conjunction with Cti, CMF and industry representatives, is involved in consultations with the Dti and Defra, the aim being to persuade UK government that the casting sector should not be included in the second phase of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme which will run from 2008 to 2013. The sector was not involved in the first phase, which commenced in January 2008. The costs of permits, environmental monitoring, verification and compliance with the Scheme are likely to be prohibitive and lead to closures. In addition, the Scheme will also raise competition issues, possibly within member states and certainly with other overseas countries. The outcome of the consultation will be known later this year.
