LARGEST COLLEGE IN WALES, CHOOSES RAD’S FAST PAYBACK SOLUTION TO CONVERGE VOICE & DATA SERVICES

RAD Data Communications’ “Fast Payback” solution has been chosen by Coleg Gwent, the largest further education college in Wales and one of the largest in the UK. Based on RAD’s IPmux TDM over IP gateway, the “Fast Payback” solution will provide high quality converged voice and data services to the college’s seven campuses, supporting more than 20,000 students and 1,500 staff. In addition to providing a cost-efficient alternative to Voice over IP, the “Fast Payback” solution will save the college more than £50,000 a year in leased line costs.

Coleg Gwent initially considered deploying a VoIP solution but found that would require a major and costly upgrade to the signaling protocol of their PBX, with a possible loss of functionality. RAD’s “Fast Payback” solution, in contrast, is transparent to signaling protocols, allowing Coleg Gwent to carry voice traffic over a BT LAN Extension Service 100 Mbps circuit without having to change the signaling protocol of their PBX or incur any loss of functionality.

Installation of the solution was carried out overnight to avoid downtime. “The following morning there were no problems to report and the telephone users were not aware that anything had happened,” said Evan Smith, Assistant IT Manager, Coleg Gwent. “We have not experienced any major issues since the installation and we are saving over £50,000 a year, which we were previously spending on leased lines.”

RAD’s innovative “Fast Payback” solution allows circuit extension over IP networks, enabling voice, video and data traffic to be carried transparently over packet-switched networks such as Gigabit Ethernet, IP and MPLS. This allows Coleg Gwent to use its LES 100 circuit for telephony applications with the same level of quality, reliability and functionality currently provided by TDM networks, and without the need to replace TDM switches. The solution was installed by Nessco, an authorized RAD distributor.

“A lot of people are simply not aware that there exists a cost-effective and reliable alternative to Voice over IP,“ says Grant Notman, UK General Manager, RAD Data Communications. “The Fast Payback solution is very quick and simple to provision, and provides a return on investment in less than twelve months.”
