HUSKY HELPS VISTEON PRODUCE AWARD-WINNING PART FOR NEW MUSTANG

Visteon and Husky are working together to produce a two-colour instrument panel for the 2005 Ford Mustang that won top prize in the Process, Assembly and Enabling Technologies category at this year's SPE Automotive Innovation Awards.

Visteon is the first Tier I supplier to bring a moulded-in-colour, two-tone instrument panel to the automotive market.

Husky worked closely with Visteon engineers on the project and supplied the equipment -- a large-tonnage Quadloc Dual 1650, two-colour injection-moulding machine with Polaris Control and a Tracer TMB robot. The project took only six months from concept to completion, and the system was fully integrated for Visteon at Husky's technical centre in Detroit.

'We are thrilled to have been asked by Visteon to be part of this exciting project,' Rich Sieradzki, General Manager of Husky's Detroit technical centre, said. 'It has allowed Husky to showcase our automotive capabilities and to work with great partners who value innovation.'

The unique process used to produce the instrument panel is known as simultaneous-shot injection-moulding. It involves the simultaneous injection of two colours into the mould from two different injection units on the moulding machine, eliminating the need for additional painting processes. All knit lines are placed in areas covered by finish panels on the final product. The process helps reduce squeaks and rattles between instrument panel and finish panels and improves scratch resistance. The process also reduces equipment costs, production time and scrap.

'Simultaneous-shot injection-moulding leads to lower costs, excellent product performance and minimal risk for the customer,' Sieradzki said. 'Husky's Quadloc Dual 1650 machine with Polaris Control provides the flexibility, reliability and shot-to-shot performance required for this complex process and part.'
