DUPONT R&D CENTER IN SHANGHAI TAILORS INNOVATIONS FOR ASIA PACIFIC REGION
05 September 2006 - DuPont Engineering Polymers

Since it officially opened nine months ago, the DuPont Corporate Research & Development Center in Pudong, Shanghai, now houses several DuPont businesses and over 100 scientists and technicians working to deliver DuPont innovations tailored to the needs of the Asia Pacific region.

Located in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, an area dedicated to high-tech and research organizations, the facility represents an investment to date of more than $20 million. Globally, DuPont has more than 75 R&D facilities. The Shanghai R&D center is the third major DuPont research facility outside North America.

According to Douglas Muzyka, President of DuPont Greater China, the new facility demonstrates DuPont’s commitment to “going where the growth is.” “We see unique growth opportunities in Asia Pacific and particularly China. Our investment in the Shanghai R&D center is a commitment to the regional market. It enables us to better meet customers’ rapidly changing needs in the region and also globally,” Muzyka said.

The Shanghai R&D facility was designed to provide support for research, applications development, training, technology transfer, and licensing of DuPont technologies for China, Asia Pacific, and global markets. This center also will provide an enhanced platform to enable technological exchanges and research collaborations between DuPont and leading Chinese and Asian universities and research institutes.

“DuPont science and technology is addressing today's global needs for improvements in energy conservation and the development of alternative, sustainable energy sources; improvements in food production, processing, quality and safety; advances in nutrition and health; new technologies for safety and protection; innovative materials and color technologies for transportation modalities; and dramatic changes in all methods of communication. Our R&D efforts are focused on developing solutions to assist customers in meeting all of those needs,” said Uma Chowdhry, DuPont Senior Vice President and Chief Science & Technology Officer.

DuPont businesses that have already opened facilities at the R&D Center include DuPont Engineering Polymers; DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers, which has announced an industrial-scale, nine layer blown film co-extrusion line to support global product development; and the DuPont Performance Elastomers subsidiary, which is offering processing, product development and testing capabilities for regional customers.

In addition, the DuPont Imaging Technologies new Customer Technology Center at the Shanghai R&D Center is one of the most advanced pre-press facilities of its kind in Asia Pacific, equipped with DuPont’s advanced Cyrel FAST thermal processor, digital proofing solutions and state-of-the-art analysis equipment. DuPont recently was recognized as the best known brand of printing plates by the Printing Association of China. The Technology Center positions DuPont to maintain that recognition by offering customer support at a single location convenient to customers.
