IXEF POLYARYLAMIDE SOLVES DESIGN CHALLENGE FOR GERMAN OFFICE FURNITURE MANUFACTURER

Few companies have influenced the office and contract furniture sector as strongly as Wilkhahn, a 96-year-old German firm whose sales outside Germany account for more than half of the company’s total sales. Prior to launching production on its new Modus conference chair, Wilkhahn faced a unique weight and stress-bearing problem with the design of the chair’s seat base and back frame. “The chair’s two-foot high back frame required a particularly long span of rigid
material that would normally be associated with some type of metal product. But Wilkhahn also needed the product design flexibility that comes from being able to mold plastic,” said Bill Looney, Solvay Advanced Polymers, L.L.C. global market manger. “Solvay Advanced Polymers’ IXEF polyarylamide resin solved the problem,” Looney said. “Wilkhahn found that the material’s flexural properties resulted in superior
performance to die cast aluminum when tested under the same seat loading conditions and pressures on the chair back frame,” Looney added. He also said Wilkhahn was pleased with IXEF resin’s excellent surface
appearance. “Even though it is a reinforced product with a high glass fiber content, the surface appearance of the molded seat base and back frame was superb.”
