INTRODUCING THE STDR MOULD FOR DVD-R
09 April 2002 - Axxicon Mould Technology

Building on its successful new generation S-Mould, AXXICON Moulds has introduced a mould for the efficient production of the DVD-R format: the STDR Mould

The STDR mould is capable of perfectly replicating the highly complex DVD-R structure with its microscopic and relatively deep grooves at fast cycle times. Built-in thermal management enables the mould to operate at high temperatures to ensure uniform replication of grooves.

The advanced new STDR Mould is now operational at a number of locations in the world and achieving a uniform replication greater than 98% at cycle times of around 5s.

Mechanical aspects of the STDR Mould ensure overall stability and reliability. Technologically advanced features include controlled movement of the pneumatic venting ring, which compensates automatically for variations in stamper thickness, a completely new nozzle design to ensure an undisturbed flow of the polycarbonate and an extended life span. Advanced geometric cutting technologies and an optimised cooling capacity of the cutting bush and other parts contribute to the thermal stability of the mould. The improved sprue design ensures high uptime.

In addition to these features, the STDR Mould comes complete with a mechanical ejector sleeve to further deliver productivity. A proprietary mould guiding system ensures that the two halves of the mould are always perfectly centred during the entire moulding process. Together these systems also contribute to a widening of the processing window as well as overall disc quality.

Since the beginning of this year, a number of STDR Moulds has been installed at leading replicators in Europe and Asia and responses have been extremely positive. According to Maurice Smits, AXXICON Moulds Sales Manager Europe, mould reliability is extremely important for customers: “No-one in the replicating industry can afford machine down time – so in line with all AXXICON product lines, we set out to produce a mould that can operate trouble free 24 hours, 7 days a week. Reactions from our first users indicate that we have more than achieved this objective.”

Over the past 18 years, AXXICON Moulds has served the replication industry while building a reputation for the development of mould design and production. The company has implemented many improvements, mostly aimed at increasing reliability and shortening cycle times.
