SCHOOL UPGRADES ITS ENTRANCE WITH NOMAD MATTING SOLUTIONS FROM 3M
27 May 2006 - 3M Europe
| With more than 1500 pupils aged 11-18 on site every day, Specialist Arts College and Sixth Form Centre, Shenley Court School in Northfield, Birmingham has a tough job keeping clean! The site is open for many hours a day, and hosts evening classes as well as being a large, community secondary school, so maintaining the appearance is very important. |
When a School Inspection report included comments about the dirty appearance of the corridors and entrance areas, the school opted to try a new high performance 3M Nomad entrance matting solution as part of the refurbishment programme. School Bursar, Mrs Annette Tyler is delighted with the results. Like most secondary schools, the Shenley Court site surrounded by grass areas, which, given the nature of our British climate, can lead to a high level of dirt and moisture being tracked into the building on the soles of shoes. As Mrs Tyler explained, "pupils tend to take the shortest route between classrooms regardless of whether it’s wet or dry outside.” The previous, loose laid entrance matting was used only in short lengths so it was not trapping and collecting dirt and moisture efficiently. In addition, it was generally poorly positioned, resulting in unsightly marks, dirt, dust and moisture in many of the corridors. After a site survey, 3M suggested installing a combination of Nomad matting types in all primary entrances. An initial area of Nomad Terra 8100 matting was installed to remove and trap dirt and excess moisture. This was enhanced by a secondary area of Nomad Aqua 8500 carpet style matting to remove any remaining moisture and fine dirt. As the new Nomad entrance matting system was professionally fitted, unlike the previously used loose drop down matting, it now complies with Part 3 of the Disability Discrimination Act requirements for safe and easy access in public areas. Mrs Tyler added, “In addition to being more effective, the wide range of colours within 3M’s Nomad range offered also made it very easy to integrate with the overall decor for the site. Now that the new system has been installed in the primary entrance areas, the dirt stops there, meaning that the corridors and classrooms are much cleaner.” As the demand increases for new architectural interior design concepts and safe flooring solutions for buildings with public access, 3M uses technology innovation, expertise and years of experience to develop new solutions.
