3M LAUNCHES ADVANCED SURFACE CONDITIONING DISC SYSTEM DESIGNED TO HELP REDUCE HAND-ARM VIBRATION
14 June 2006 - 3M Europe
| Global innovation company 3M is launching a new range of surface conditioning discs as part of its ongoing commitment to the development of products that help reduce levels of hand-arm vibration. Scotch-Brite brand Centre-Pin Surface Conditioning Discs have been specially designed to minimise vibration by optimising the balance of hand-held grinders. |
The new Centre-Pin Discs, designed by a team at 3M’s UK Abrasive Systems Technical Centre in Atherstone, Warwickshire, incorporate a central hole which fits exactly round a special pin on the back-up pad. When the disc is attached to the back-up pad, the pin sits below the surface so as not to interfere with the action of the disc, but the system ensures the correct positioning of the disc every time, resulting in significantly lower levels of vibration. In tests, the new discs were found to reduce hand-arm vibration by up to fifty percent, compared to discs without a centering aid. “Even careful placement of a conventional disc onto a back-up pad can leave it out of balance enough to cause significant additional vibration,” explains Nigel Willcock, technical services manager at 3M Abrasive Systems. “The Centre-Pin System is a simple innovation that ensures perfect positioning every time.” The introduction in the UK of the Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive, which came into force in July last year, has reduced acceptable levels of hand-arm vibration by as much as 37 percent. Centre-Pin Discs are among several innovations by 3M that can help to minimise occupational exposure to vibration. “Under the new rules, employers are responsible for minimising the risks of vibration by taking proper precautionary measures and ensuring that exposure is kept to safe levels,” explains Jonathan McGargle, business development manager at 3M Abrasive Systems. “At 3M we are supporting employers as much as possible by bringing to market a range of high quality products that help them to address levels of vibration, without compromising performance.” The comprehensive range of Scotch-Brite Centre Pin Surface Conditioning Discs includes five grades: Super Duty, Heavy Duty, Coarse, Medium and Very Fine. The system is available in three sizes: 100, 115 and 178mm. Each disc features a reliable hook and loop fastening for easy attachment and removal. The discs are ideal for removing machine marks or spot weld discolouration and will not damage components. In a special introductory offer, the first 1500 customers buying the new Centre Pin Surface Conditioning Discs will receive free back-up pads from their usual 3M distributor. The new discs can also be used with existing 3M back-up pads, without the centering aid.
