BAYER MATERIALSCIENCE AG OPENS NEW COMMUNICATIONS CENTER FOR POLYCARBONATES & THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANES
05 July 2006 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

”I enjoy creating something that no-one has ever seen before.” This statement from German-born Hollywood director Roland Emmerich also applies to the activities of materials experts at Bayer MaterialScience, who are constantly working closely with customers to find new ways of using plastics.

Admittedly the results aren’t quite as spectacular as Hollywood’s, but they do drive forward technological progress in the various industry sectors. One example of this would be automotive glazing based on the polycarbonate Makrolon AG2677, which not only cuts down on weight but also enables the integration of functions and makes completely new designs possible.

In order to create an environment where future ideas will be able to flourish, the Polycarbonates and Thermoplastic Polyurethanes business units of Bayer MaterialScience AG in Leverkusen decided to establish the TechniKomm. This communications center is an extension of the Technical Service Center, where the focus lies firmly on plastics processing and where machinery is always at the cutting edge of industry development. Dr. Günter Hilken, head of the PCS Business Unit, underscores the significance of the now complete Technical Service Center: ”Long ago, we evolved from a simple raw materials supplier to an added-value partner with all-encompassing process expertise. Over several years, the Technical Service Center has helped us make important discoveries in process engineering and use these to benefit our customers. The TechniKomm now offers the opportunity to discuss new approaches and product designs in a bright, friendly environment, thus continuing to breathe new life into our company motto ”VisionWorks”. It is not simply a showroom though. The TechniKomm showcases Bayer MaterialScience’s commitment to innovation and uses numerous case studies to illustrate the spirit of inventiveness exhibited by our customers.” Dr. Tim Bielfeldt, head of the TPU Business Unit, is also impressed by the inspirational environment provided by the center: ”The new TechniKomm makes technology, an important factor in success at Bayer MaterialScience, both visible and tangible. Simply supplying granules, foils or sheets is not enough, it is technical consultation and implementation that help find the right solution for each application.”

The case studies are divided into several info blocks. Topics include ”Automotive Interiors” and ”Automotive Exteriors”, ”Medical Technology”, ”Sports and Leisure”, ”Optical Data Storage”, ”Electrical Engineering and Electronics”, ”Industrial Engineering” (such as construction glazing and household goods), ”Fantasia”, and ”Co-Branding”. The exhibition, which will be changed at regular intervals, is not aimed solely at experts and customers, but also at school groups and Bayer MaterialScience staff. The fact that the TechniKomm has been jointly established by two separate business units (PCS and TPU) clearly illustrates that solution-oriented thinking and overarching research activities are an integral component of Bayer MaterialScience’s corporate philosophy.
