BAYER MATERIALSCIENCE DEVELOPED NEW ESTER-BASED TPU GRADES
30 June 2006 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Bayer MaterialScience AG is offering four new thermoplastic polyurethanes with its new Desmopan grades DP 3055D, DP 3059D, DP 3065D and DP 3072D. They are based on esters and have been custom-made for injection molding. “This development is our response to the growing demand for ester-based TPU grades that exhibit greater abrasion resistance and improved processing characteristics,” says Luigi Cermesoni, head of the TPU segment at Bayer MaterialScience.

The new plasticizer-free products, which span hardnesses ranging from 55 to 72 Shore D, replace the TPU grades Desmopan 355, 356, 359, 365 and 372. Potential application areas include technical injection molded items, shoe soles and heels, ski boot shells, rollers, castor coatings and gear knobs in cars.

“Depending on application, design and component type, the new TPU products are up to 50 percent more abrasion-resistant than the previous grades. This makes the corresponding components far more wear-resistant and durable,” comments Cermesoni. The fact that the melt solidifies faster is particularly beneficial in processing as it leads to shorter cooling and cycle times, thus increasing productivity and cost-efficiency. Other benefits include excellent resistance to hydrolysis, good low-temperature flexibility and chemical resistance to oils, greases and various solvents.
