NEW ENVIRONMENTALLY COMPATIBLE BINDER FOR INDUSTRIAL COATINGS
03 April 2006 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

The new binder Bayhydrol XP 2592 is a cosolvent-free, waterborne polyurethane dispersion for the formulation of high-quality coatings suitable for the coating of metal industrial goods such as agricultural machinery, shock absorbers and axles.

Leverkusen, For many years, Bayer MaterialScience AG has developed raw materials and formulations for high performance polyurethane coatings. More recently, the development of environmentally compatible coatings with a lower content of volatile organic compounds has gained significant importance. The company now offers Bayhydrol XP 2592, a cosolvent-free, waterborne polyester-polyurethane dispersion for the formulation of high-quality coatings. They emit only very slight amount of VOCs and help meet the requirements of the VOC Directive without the use of costly and complex waste air purification. These coatings are applied to metal industrial goods such as shock absorbers, axles and agricultural machinery.

“What distinguishes Bayhydrol XP 2592 is its extreme versatility,” says Dr. Ulrich Freudenberg, an expert on polyurethane industrial coatings at Bayer MaterialScience. The new binder can be used to formulate primers and single-layer coatings offering very good corrosion protection. It can also be used for the formulation of high-gloss topcoats with good chemical and weathering resistance, or even effect coatings. This nearly limitless versatility also extends to application techniques, with the choice of spray, dip, flow and roller application.

Bayhydrol XP 2952 was originally developed for air drying and forced drying, with atmospheric oxygen driving the crosslinking process. However, the OH functionality of the binder also permits the formulation of baking coatings, with amino resin crosslinking, and two-component coatings, with polyisocyanate crosslinking.

Thanks to the large number of possible combinations, the new raw material can be used to vary coating properties over a wide range. “The market is already showing a lot of interest in our new multitalent. Several customers are working on production line deployments,” reports Freudenberg.
