NEW EASY FLOWING VARIANT OF PC/ABS BLEND BAYBLEND

Bayblend DP T65 TX from Bayer MaterialScience AG is a new non-reinforced blend of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer. With otherwise comparable technical properties, the flowability of the material is approximately 15 percent higher than for the established PC/ABS Bayblend T65.

“With this new product we are responding to a rapidly growing demand for PC/ABS blends that can be processed cost-effectively using thin-wall technology. We were able to increase flowability without having to compromise on the high level of properties of Bayblend, for example its high impact strength at low temperatures,” explains Dr. Eckhard Wenz, a PC/ABS expert in the Polycarbonates Business Unit. “Initial customer trials met with a very positive response from our customers.” Bayer MaterialScience sees great potential for using the new material, particularly in vehicle interiors and for coated components for vehicle exteriors. It is also suited to all other typical Bayblend applications, for example in the household appliance industry, the electrical/electronics sector, and data technology.

High flowability offers processors economic benefits in several respects. For example, they can reduce either the processing temperature of the thermoplastic or the injection pressure. A lower processing temperature shortens cooling, and therefore also cycle times, which in turn lowers production costs. Lower injection pressure, on the other hand, makes it possible to use smaller injection molding machines with lower clamping forces. This gives processors greater flexibility in selecting machines and planning production. There are also benefits for component quality, as reducing filling pressure enables molded parts with finely structured geometries to be produced with lower stress. Reduced filling pressure and longer holding pressure in production mean less distortion of the molded part.

“There are also potential savings in mold costs. In many cases, simpler molds can be deployed as the longer flow paths offered by Bayblend DP T65 TX mean that not so many gates are required,” says Wenz.
